If you’re an international student dreaming of studying at the University of Rochester, it’s important to know what you need to do to apply. Each of these Faculties share general Admission requirements. Here’s a simple breakdown of the things you’ll need:
Academic Records
First off, you’ll need to provide records of your academic achievements from high school or any previous colleges you attended. These records should show the classes you took and the grades you got.
Standardized Tests
You’ll likely need to take some standardized tests, like the SAT or ACT. These tests help the admissions team understand how well you do in subjects like math, reading, and writing. Here at Rochester, we do not require entrance exams as part of the application process for many of our programs. We will be pleased to review your GRE results as part of your application if you have previously took it and would want to submit them. Candidates are advised to submit their GRE results if they are interested in applying for specific doctorate scholarships offered by the university. 2928 is the University of Rochester’s GRE code. Additionally, for international applicants who are not native English speakers, TOEFL or IELTS scores are necessary.
English Proficiency
Since classes at the University of Rochester are taught in English, you may need to prove that you’re good at English. This might mean taking a test like the TOEFL or the IELTS to show that you can understand and speak English well enough to keep up with classes.

You must apply as a transfer applicant or as a first-year student in order to enroll as an undergraduate at the University of Rochester in Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. You must apply directly through the Eastman School application if you want to pursue a bachelor of music degree exclusively at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music.
Required Materials
Depending on the document, your family member, testing location, or school must send the following necessary materials to us immediately. Documents sent to the Office of Admissions via email will not be processed by the office. Additionally, the school code for the University of Rochester is 002894.
- Transcript from secondary school
- A teacher’s recommendation is necessary.
- Counselor recommendation and school report
- Report on the midyear (when available)
- Final transcript, if one is accessible
- Transcript from college, if applicable
- The results of the English language exam OR a request to waive the English proficiency requirement.
- The International Financial Support Form (IFSF) is required for applicants who do not require need-based financial aid, while the CSS Profile is needed for those who do.

International transfer Applicants
Here’s what you need to send to us for your application. Your school, testing center, or family member can send them directly to us, and it’s best if they’re sent online. Our school code is 002894. Here’s the list of what we need:
1. Your official college grades
2. Your final high school grades
3. A report from your college (if you’re applying through the Common Application)
4. A recommendation from someone who knows about your academics (if you’re applying through the Common Application)
5. Results from an English test or a request to waive the English language requirement
6. Proof of financial support (if you’re not applying for financial aid based on need) or a CSS Profile (if you are applying for financial aid based on need)
7. If you studied outside the US, you’ll need to get your college grades evaluated by a company like World Education Services (WES) or Education Credential Evaluators (ECE). Make sure they send the evaluation to us.
8. If you’ve done a year of full-time college already, you might not need to send your high school grades. But it’s still good to send them because it could help your chances of getting in. Also, if you want to skip sending your high school grades, just email us at admit@admissions.rochester.edu after you apply.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
We are aware that a student’s capacity to pay for their university education is influenced by a variety of factors. We pledge to serve every accepted student’s complete proven need. The University aims to make attendance affordable by offering a combination of need-based and merit-based aid. For overseas candidates, however, financial need is a contributing element. As a result, admission for needy kids is extremely selective.
International applicants must prove during the application process that they have the resources to attend Rochester (either personal funds or sponsorship) or that they are eligible for need-based assistance. The paperwork you have to send in as part of the application procedure will vary depending on whether you qualify for need-based financial assistance.
International Students who do not qualify for need-based financial assistance.
Candidates who can cover the entire cost of attendance are required to include a completed International Financial Support Form (IFSF) to their admissions application.
- If your application is not filed with a completed IFSF, it will stay incomplete.
- The IFSF lists acceptable funding sources.
- A copy of a sponsor letter should be sent as supporting material by applicants who are receiving funding from their government, a private sponsor, or another funding source that isn’t mentioned on IFSF.

International Students who qualify for need-based financial assistance
If you can’t afford all the costs to go to Rochester without help from the school or other sponsors, you need to fill out the CSS Profile. This form helps decide if you can get money from the University to help pay for school. Also, you have to do it every year you’re in school. You can start filling it out on October 1.
Only a few international students will get money from the University because there isn’t a lot of it available. If you can’t find enough money from other places to cover all the costs, you can’t get into the University.
We know that the CSS Profile Fee might be too expensive for some students who really need help. So, we bought some waivers for those students. To ask for a waiver:
- You have to apply to Rochester using the Common Application or Coalition for College Application.
- You have to say that the fee for the CSS Profile is too much for you.
You have to ask for a waiver by January 15 if you’re a new student or by April 15 if you’re transferring. If you’re applying for the spring semester, you need to ask by November 15. Furthermore, after you ask for the waiver, the International Admissions team will talk to you about what to do next.
Merit-based Financial Aid
Merit scholarships are awarded to all eligible candidates, regardless of citizenship. There is no need for extra paperwork in order to apply for a merit scholarship. Merit scholarships are given out regardless of a student’s need, thus in order to complete your application for admission, you still need to send in the necessary paperwork as mentioned above.
